Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced that Canada will request a 12-month extension to address the unconstitutional first-generation limit on citizenship by descent. This follows the Ontario Superior Court’s December 2023 ruling, which found key provisions unconstitutional. The government has implemented interim measures offering discretionary citizenship grants to affected individuals while awaiting the reintroduction and consideration of Bill C-71, which aims to reform the Citizenship Act while preserving the value of Canadian citizenship.
