Canada’s federal courts are grappling with an unprecedented surge in immigration cases, with the Federal Court projecting 24,000 filings by year-end – a staggering 44% increase from 2023. The Courts Administration Service (CAS) has revealed a $35 million annual funding shortfall, leading to significant delays in major cities. Nearly 500 cases have exceeded the mandatory 90-day processing limit in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, with additional wait times ranging from 9 to 12 weeks. Justice Minister Arif Virani is scheduled to meet with chief justices to address these mounting challenges that threaten access to justice.
