Holland College in Prince Edward Island has announced suspending several programs for the upcoming academic year due to a significant decline in international student enrollment. The college anticipates an 83% drop in international students, forecasting a loss of $7 million in tuition revenue as enrollment shrinks from 799 students in 2024 to around 140 by 2026. As a result, eight programs will be suspended, including electronics engineering technology, marketing, and advertising, while three others will undergo downsizing, impacting 35 staff members. Current students in these programs will be allowed to finish their second year, but no new admissions will be permitted. This decision stems from the federal government’s recent reduction of study permits by 35%, leading to financial strain on post-secondary institutions that depend heavily on the higher tuition fees paid by international students.
