Canada is enhancing student employment prospects by adding 40,000 opportunities under the Student Work Placement Program (SWPP), backed by $207.6 million. This initiative aims to help post-secondary students gain practical work experience through co-ops, paid internships, hackathons, and more, ensuring they develop skills relevant to today’s labour market. Since its 2017 launch, the SWPP has created over 249,000 work-integrated learning opportunities and funded over 57,000 placements in 2023-24 alone, reaching 87% of post-secondary institutions. The program supports diverse students and addresses labour shortages in AI, agriculture, aerospace, and energy sectors, connecting them with employers seeking skilled workers.
