Many Iranian-Canadians announced that they feel like “second class” citizens while travelling to the US as they are getting stopped and undergoing additional screenings at the US-Canada border. The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) stopped Iranian-Canadians who had to undergo mandatory military training in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Iranian travellers say that since all men in Iran above the age of 18 have to do mandatory service with one of the arms of the military, they had no choice other than to serve. Iranian-Canadians who had been stopped and detained while crossing the US border state that it is unfair that their names are being flagged as people who have helped a terrorist organization.
