Ontario is boosting jobs and innovation in the forest sector with a $11.3 million investment in five key projects across northeastern Ontario. Through the Forest Biomass Program, the government supports advancements in green energy, clean technologies, and product development using underused wood and mill by-products. Hornepayne Power Inc. will receive $7.5 million to modernize energy production and explore green hydrogen, while GreenFirst Forest Products will use nearly $3 million to upgrade its biomass plant and develop eco-friendly fuel alternatives. Other recipients include Circular Carbon Canada, Wikwemikong Development Commission, and a Timmins-led biochar feasibility study aiming to convert waste into clean energy and economic growth. These initiatives will create good local jobs, improve productivity, and generate new revenue streams. The funding also fosters Indigenous partnerships and helps strengthen regional supply chains like harvesting and trucking. With over 137,000 jobs supported by the sector in 2023, Ontario continues to back forestry as a pillar of its economy.
