Quebec immigration minister to protect temporary foreign workers

Allegations of abuse of temporary foreign workers in Quebec have led Quebec Immigration Minister Christine Fréchette to seek recommendations from a consultative organization on employer-specific work permits. Fréchette expressed concern about the vulnerability and abuse that can arise from the Temporary Foreign Worker Program’s employer-specific work permit. While mechanisms for monitoring and feedback exist, Fréchette wants to offer more flexibility to temporary foreign workers. A Commission des Partenaires du Marché du Travail study will provide recommendations for reforms to support temporary foreign workers better. The CNESST, Quebec’s workplace health and safety department, is actively working to ensure equitable treatment of temporary foreign workers and to help employers conform to labour standards.
