A recent study by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and Statistics Canada reveals that while immigrants who become Canadian citizens demonstrate better economic performance, this advantage is not caused by citizenship acquisition itself. The research, published on June 25, 2025, examined data from immigrants who arrived between 2003 and 2012 and found that, although naturalized immigrants had higher earnings, employment rates, and public sector representation, these superior outcomes stem from pre-existing characteristics, such as skills and motivation, rather than citizenship status. The findings challenge the assumption that naturalization is a direct economic improvement tool for immigrants.
